Are Old Stamps Worth Anything?

Many old stamp collections contain hidden value. Learn what makes vintage stamps desirable to collectors.

Many people inherit stamp collections and assume they have little or no value, but this is not always the case. While a large proportion of stamps are common and widely available, certain collections contain overlooked items of significant interest to collectors.

Value depends heavily on what the collection contains. Early British material, Commonwealth issues, and classic European stamps tend to attract the most attention. Even within common albums, specialist varieties such as watermark changes or printing errors may be present.

Condition again plays a key role. Well-preserved stamps with strong colour, intact perforations and minimal hinge damage are far more desirable than heavily handled examples. This is particularly important for older material.

Inherited collections often include a mixture of common definitives alongside more interesting items that were not recognised at the time of collection. This is where expert assessment becomes important, as value is not always immediately visible.

In some cases, collections assembled decades ago may also contain postal history items such as covers, first day issues or overseas mail, which can be more valuable than individual stamps.

Professional evaluation is strongly recommended before selling, as breaking up or discarding material prematurely can result in lost value.
