A primary hidden flaw that appraisers check for is a 'paper thin'. This occurs when a stamp has been aggressively removed from an album page or envelope, causing a microscopic layer of the paper fibers on the reverse side to stay behind. Creases and internal wrinkles also drastically alter the grading of a stamp. While some creases are bold and obvious, others are faint structural bends within the paper layers that only become visible when viewed at an oblique angle under directed lighting. An otherwise flawless stamp with a single microscopic bend can see its expected auction realization cut in half because collectors demand absolute structural perfection.
