A superb collection of 1840 Penny Blacks carefully written up on album pages and arranged by plate number, comprising a total of 84 examples. All but approximately fifteen examples possessed four margins, with many particularly fine and attractive stamps throughout the collection. In addition, the lot included eleven Penny Red ‘black’ plates, effectively forming desirable matched pairs alongside the Penny Blacks. Better represented plates included Plate 3 with four examples, Plate 7 with five examples, Plate 8 with seven examples, Plate 9 with seven examples, four examples from Plate 10 and a good three-margin example from the scarce Plate 11. The quality, organisation and strength across the plates made this an exceptional classic Great Britain collection, attracting strong specialist interest and competitive bidding throughout the sale.
